Alas, it is no more but the building remains beautiful as ever. We made a special trip to the State Street Flagship store that was once the home of Marshall Fields - a Chicago landmark. They suggested the State Street location so off we went. Everything was either too revealing or too old. They had a lot of evening wear for women but did not have much selection in the junior section. I was disappointed with the selection of prom dresses.

It is in the Water Tower Mall (I think that is what it is called) adjacent to The American Girl Store (unbelievable - but that is another blog post all together). Their sales racks can also be really good. it is usually has a above average selection and fair prices. She is a shopper too and the fun of just walking around, browsing and maybe buying a thing or two was just what we had in mind. This child would be the only one of my three kids that could possibly indulge me in this guilty-pleasure. Our main goal for the trip was to shop-til-we-dropped for the fun of it. You can take the train at Port Huron and travel in comfort! Getting from Southwestern Ontario to Chicago is fairly simple and cheap. prom and she wanted to get a dress in Chicago.

And that was probably the only sign that reminded me in the store about the pandemic, since the store was full of visitors, happily shopping for the upcoming holidays! One could get some great bargains, since there were sales going on in full swing.Īll the associates I saw were wearing masks, most of the customers too, for that matter. The ground floor was beautifully and imaginatively decorated, and it was all shining in festive lights the accessories and cosmetics department were offering the abundance of items, which we usually buy as holiday gifts. Last time I visited the store was a month ago, right after Thanksgiving, when everything and everybody was getting ready for winter holidays, Christmas and New Year celebrations. Above the entrance to the store from State Street the department store still shows its old name - Marshall Field & Company (opened in 1852 in Chicago) - but of course, now we all know and love it as Macy's. Macy's on State Street is all decorated for holidays. Unfortunately I was not able to hang around until someone showed up but did inform one of the ladies that I helped that someone from management team was coming! Macy’s, you have completely ruined Marshall fields. When asked if there were any other employees in the area, I told her no employees just shoppers. She did ask for the associate’s name but she had already high tailed it out of that area. It upset me so that these ladies were treated so poorly that I called the store offices from my cell phone and informed the woman that answered as to what was going on and that they needed to get a manager to that area.

I took the item in question and found a different scanner and got the price for them. Had she offered she would have found that the scanner wasn’t operational at the time. The associate told them to scan but did not offer to help. Having worked retail myself, I offered to help them as they were trying to scan an item for a price check. You can stand outside the walnut room and view but it is not the same! We went to the Christmas clearance section downstairs and found only one associate working and she was extremely rude! We observed her being rude to a couple of ladies that were probably in their early 80’s. The store looked dirty and run down and Macy’s has sold the upper floors so the viewing area for the tree is no longer there. This trip is the first one we have been able to make in 7 years. We always enjoyed the Christmas tree and having hot chocolate or a snack by the tree in the Walnut room. We have gone to Marshall Fields in the past when our children were young. We went as a family group, our 2 daughters, ages 38 and 43 my husband and I.
